ALTSOL tanning mist bottle on dark volcanic stone with botanical elements

what is DHA in self tan and is it safe

if you've ever read the ingredients list on a self-tan product, you'll have seen DHA near the top. it's the active ingredient in almost every self-tanning product on the market. but what actually is it, and should you be worried about it?

what is DHA

DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone. it's a simple sugar, derived from plant sources like sugar cane or sugar beet, that reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin to produce a brown colour. this reaction is the same basic chemistry behind bread turning golden in the oven.

the colour develops over 4 to 8 hours and gradually fades as your skin naturally sheds its outer layer, typically over 5 to 7 days.

is DHA safe

yes. DHA has been approved for use in cosmetics by regulatory bodies including the EU, the UK, and the FDA for decades. it does not penetrate beyond the outermost layer of skin, which means it doesn't enter your bloodstream.

most gradual self-tans sit between 2% and 5% DHA. instant formulas tend to use higher concentrations, which is why they develop faster but can look less natural.

what concentration does ALTSOL use

the ALTSOL Hydrating Tanning Mist uses 4% DHA. this sits in the gradual range, enough to build a natural-looking colour over multiple applications, without the risk of over-development or patchiness that comes with higher concentrations.

why the formula around DHA matters

DHA is only part of the story. most self-tans stop there. what surrounds it in the formula determines how your skin feels during and after the process.

ALTSOL pairs DHA with six skin-first botanicals including Centella Asiatica, Licorice Root, Chamomile and Green Tea, alongside Aquaxyl, a clinically-studied moisturising complex. the result is a formula that nourishes your skin throughout the tanning process, not just colours it.

can you be allergic to DHA

true DHA allergies are rare. if you have sensitive skin or have experienced reactions to self-tan products before, it's worth doing a patch test before full application. apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist and wait 24 hours before use.

reactions to self-tan products are more commonly caused by fragrance, preservatives, or other additives in the formula rather than DHA itself.

the bottom line

DHA is safe, well-studied, and the most effective way to tan without UV exposure. the concentration and formula around it is what separates a premium product from a cheap one. at 4%, ALTSOL gives you a buildable, natural result without compromise. read more about what's in the ALTSOL formula.
